Pesticide residues found in celery
Netherlands
Thursday 22 July 2004
Dutch environmental and consumer groups have discovered traces of pesticides on celery on sale at different supermarkets in the country.
Stichting Natuur en Milieu (Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment), Friends of the Earth Netherlands and consumer organisation Goede Waar & Co said that pesticide residues had been found in celery on sale at Bas van der Heijden/Dirk van den Broek, C1000, Edah, Lidl, Plus and Super De Boer supermarkets.
Laurus, which runs the Edah, Konmar Superstores and Super De Boer banners, immediately decided to withdraw the celery from its shelves, though it stressed that celery in its supermarkets presented no health hazard.
