Morocco’s Agriculture and Fisheries ministry and FAO (the Food and Agriculture Organization) signed three cooperation projects worth 815,000 euros. Two of the projects will be launched at national level, while the third is regional, Map news agency reports. They are part of the technical cooperation programs (TCP) and the FAO TCP facility, which enables FAO representatives to respond to government requests for urgent, small-scale technical assistance activities and to strengthen field program development process.
The first national project aims to reinforce local capacities so as to develop quality mountain products at a cost of 283,000 euros. The second, on technical assistance to set up and promote the system of recognizing distinctive features of the origin and the quality of agricultural products and food staples in Morocco, requires a budget amounting to 421,000 euros. The regional project focuses on the integrated management of invasive plants, particularly yellow-berried nightshades in Morocco and Tunisia, for 259,000 euros.
The Secretary General of the agriculture department, Moha Marghi, who signed the projects on the Moroccan side, said the FAO assistance aims to improve farmers’ incomes and living conditions in the marginalized areas, by promoting their agricultural and food products both at the national and international markets. He recalled that the agriculture department had received, for the fiscal year 2008, a significant assistance from the FAO to finance five projects in different fields.
