Peruvian ginger exports in 2020 increased by 156% in value compared to 2019.

The value of Peruvian exports of ginger (kion) totaled 106 million dollars in 2020, showing an increase of 156 % compared to 42 million dollars in 2019, according to the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat).
In terms of volume, product deliveries totaled 50.649 tons in 2020. It is an increase of 116.2 % compared to the previous year.
Gabriel Amaro, executive director of the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP), indicated that Peruvian ginger is already an important agro-export product of this country, due to the potential that it has in various markets. The evidence of this is the strong increase occurred in 2020, despite the context that was strongly marked by the pandemic.
Peruvian ginger exports to the European continent reached more than 55 million dollars in 2020, an increase of 175.8 % compared to the previous year.
Exports of the product to the United States totaled 47 million dollars, making up 44 % of Peruvian exports of this product and with an increase of more than 129 % compared to 2019.
The Netherlands received shipments valued at 39 million dollars, an increase of 197 % compared to the previous year and accounted for 37 % of total exports of the product in 2020.
Other destinations: Spain ($ 5.58 million), Canada
The Peruvian ginger agro-export production chain is based on several small and medium producers, mainly from the Junín Region, who successfully contribute to the rise of formal export agriculture in Peru.
