Today, October 15 is the International Day of Rural Women. Implemented by the United Nations General Assembly since 2008, the celebration of this Day recognizes the "decisive role and contribution of rural women, especially indigenous women, in promoting agricultural and rural development, improving food security and the eradication of rural poverty ".
The General Assembly calls on Member States to work with United Nations agencies and civil society to give greater prominence to the situation of rural women. This involves developing and implementing national policies for promotion and protection, designing assistance programs and services.
The contribution of rural women to development is invaluable. Women and girls play a major and increasingly recognized role in the sustainability of rural homes and communities. They constitute a large part of the agricultural workforce, formal and informal. They also contribute significantly to agricultural production, food security and nutrition, land and natural resource management, and capacity building for adaptation to climate change.
