New way to protect pome fruit from aphids, mealybugs and pear psylla
Valent U.S.A., one of the leaders in the development and commercialization of both traditional chemical and biorational products, which protected agricultural crops, released a new product that helps apple and pear growers to protect fruit from damaging insects.
Senstar™ insecticide protects against aphids (woolly apple aphid), pear psylla and other soft-bodied insects. New option to protect fruit equips growers with two effective modes of action, each of which act in unique ways to prevent young insects from growing into adult form. In result, all life stages of the targeted pests are disrupted, giving growers long-lasting control of soft-bodied insects, and the ability to achieve high quality clean fruit from the start.
New product controls fruit pests in the following ways: First, prevents sticky pears or black sooty molds russet from infesting pear psylla and maintains stronger trees by preventing woolly apple aphid from feeding on roots and limbs. The next way is systemic activity that controls pests hiding in the crevices of the bark and colonizes new vegetative growth as well as existing foliage. The last way to protect the quality of the fruit is a fats translaminar movement that penetrates leaf tissue to help reach the pests, which feed on the underside of the leaves.
Allison Walston, field market development specialist for the Pacific Northwest at Valent, commented their new product is an effective tool for petals fall to hinder all stages of life from developing to feeding. "For pests like pear psylla, it is important to have a season-long program to keep nymphs from feeding and producing honeydew," she added.
Senstar helps growers effectively manage major insect pests with low impact to beneficial arthropods. It targets all life stages of pests, from eggs to sterilizing adults, and is great for integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Properties of new protection instrument helps to reach out within the canopy where insects feed and reproduce, to optimize control by preventing insects from damaging the fruit.
