In the United States, mandarins and clementines are the 2nd most consumed citrus fruits and according to a recent study should overtake oranges by the 2024/25 season. But the American production of mandarins and clementines is decreasing and imports will continue to increase.
According to the study by Gonzalo Salinas and David Magaña of RaboResearch Food and Agribusiness, since the 2008/09 season the consumption of mandarins has increased at an annual growth rate of 6%, an average of about 7 lb (0.453 kg) per person. If this growth rate continues, the study predicts that the consumption of mandarins will overtake that of oranges by the 2024/25 season.
Mandarin orange consumption in the United States has exceeded domestic production since the 1990s. After several seasons of increasing mandarin orange production, the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecasts total production of 878,000 tons for the 2021/22 season, from November to October, i.e. -25% compared to the previous year.
The growth in consumption has led to an increase of approximately 57% in US mandarin orange imports over the past 5 years. The share is estimated at one third of the total market for these imports, which mainly take place between June and November. Imports come from Chile, Peru, South Africa but also from Morocco and Uruguay.
The study predicts that South American countries will supply more off-season fruit to the United States, particularly Peru.
