Freeze on Canadian production of tomatoes that will result in a deficit for the industry and in an increase of imports.
The Leamington region, known as the tomato capital of Canada has just undergone a shot of damaging frost.
Leamington, the southernmost region of Canada on the shoreof the lake Erie, has large tomato crops and houses a factory of American company Heinz. Last weekend frost destroyed between 10 and 30% of the potential harvest of tomatoes.
Most producers do not have enough plants to replace those that have been frozen. Crops will be significantly lower than anticipated and the year will be difficult for the canning industry and producers.
