Increase in freight volumes in all regions of the world.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) published its data on global air cargo markets and believes that the momentum is in line with improved world trade.
According to IATA, demand, measured in freight tonnes (FTK = freight tonne kilometers), rose by 12.7% in May 2017 compared to the same period in the previous year. Freight capacity, measured in freight tonne-kilometers (AFTK), increased by 5.2% in May 2017 compared with the previous year.
Thus, in Asia-Pacific, the volume of airline freight increased by 11.3% in May 2017 compared with May 2016 and capacity increased by 6.2%. In North America, the increase in cargo volumes is by 13.9% and the capacity increase of 4.1%. In Latin America, volume grew by 6.7% and capacity grew by 7.1%. In the Middle East, a growth of 10.2% for volumes and 1.7% for capacity. In Europe, a growth of 15.0% for volumes and 5.7% for capacity. Africa posted the largest increase with 27.6% for freight volumes and 14.7% for capacity.
Demand is expected to continue to increase at a rate of 8% during the third quarter of 2017.
