In order to promote international trade in pomegranates, a new quality standard was approved by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
The iniciative was promoted by Spain through its Secretary of State for Trade, and approved in a session of the CEPE working group, according to the sources of this UN commission.
The regulation includes certain minimum quality criteria that will be indicated in commercial contracts and will help buyers to buy products with similar qualitative characteristics.
This new quality standard will be a reliable reference for farmers and traders, guaranteeing high quality for consumers, and thus stimulating trade in this fruit.
The pomegranate production covers an area of 300.000 hectares worldwide, according to the aforementioned UN commission, with India, China, Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, USA, Iraq, Pakistan, Spain and Syria as the main producing countries.
