Waitrose survey shows that Brussels sprouts and carrots are the number 1 pick in the UK
According to a survey by Waitrose, poll of 2,000 adults, Brussels sprouts were #1 chosen by 27 per cent – just 1 per cent ahead of those plumping for broccoli.
Peas lagged behind, on just 17%. Sprouts proved to be more popular with men than with women. They were the top pick for 34% of those aged over 55,
but they were far less popular with youngsters, being the favourite green veg with just 13 per cent of those in the 18-24 age group.
Every year around 40 000 tonnes of Brussels sprouts are eaten in the UK. It’s consumption grows in December, as it is traditional Christmas food.
Nevertheless, they keep their popularity all year long
As British Growers mention, production of Brassica family vegetables is one of the main fields for the UK (440 000 tons). Cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and other hybrids also belong to this branch.
The crop is grown across the UK but mainly focuses in the South West and up the east coast from Kent to Aberdeenshire
According this survey carrots are the nation's favourite root vegetables. Chosen by 46 per cent of respondents – far ahead of the parsnip, which gained 26 per cent of the vote.
As British Growers note each year about 9000 hectares of land gives 7301 000 tons of carrots. It takes 12 months in natural climatic conditions to harvest.
It is mainly produced in East Anglia, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Lancashire and Scotland.
Undoubtedly, Brussels sprouts deserve special attention during the pandemic, as they are a powerful source of antioxidants and vitamins C and A, along with carrots. Besides that, sprouts are good helpers to digest food, to reduce dangerous cholesterol, as well as to improve our sight or prevent headaches.
Also they show good results in dandruff treatment and other hair problems.
