In Spain, nut production continues to expand, driven by growing international demand. The greatest expansion of planted areas was recorded by pistachio, with a growth of 51% in 2020 compared to 2019.
According to a study by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, which compiled data on the nut sector, pistachio is the crop that has recorded the greatest expansion in area in recent years, with +51% in 2020 compared to 2019. The area reached 48,000 hectares planted
Almond remains the main crop, with nearly 600,000 hectares and the increase in areas is +13% in 2020 compared to 2019. New almond plantations represent 18% of the total area planted.
The walnut is also expanding with an area of 9,550 hectares, 27% of which are new plantations that have not yet entered production. On the other hand, for the hazelnut, a stagnation of the surface of production was noted.
The Spanish nut sector responds to the considerable increase in international demand and in particular that of the European Union where purchases have increased by 17% over the last 5 years.
