Forecast of citrus production in the USA in 2007

After a citrus wipeout two years ago and disruption last year from hurricanes, Florida growers have yet another "hurricane" of sorts to fight. The biggest concern in Florida is the citrus canker.
Hurricane force winds have spread the disease far into the inland orchards and into the northern orchards. In 2006, thousands of citrus trees have been destroyed, and we may easily reach into the tens of thousands of trees before it's over.
This will have a long-term effect on the industry since it takes about five years for new trees to begin any amount of sizeable crop. And if agriculture officials embargo Florida citrus from export, that will lead to much higher grapefruit and tangerine prices nationwide
