NEPG revalues its production figures 2013
NEPG (North-Western European Potato Growers), the Group of Producers of potatoes Northwest European, readjusts its previous estimation for the production of potatoes on the 5 main countries, up to +2%, a final harvest of 23,856 million tons.
The total production of potatoes is higher than in the last year, but remains below the 2.6% average of the past 5 years. In 1 year, the areas grew by 3.9% to reach 532,000 hectares. It is in Belgium that surfaces increased the most, with an increase of 12%.
Production conditions were not optimal and the average yield was relatively low on the 5 countries, substantially equivalent to that of last year. In Britain, the total production is up 20% over last year, but 2012 was the year of the smallest crop in this country since 1976. The final figures for Germany will be published later in the season, but they should not change this production estimation. So far, Germany has announced a 14% drop in its production compared to last year, a decrease of more than 1 million tons of harvested volumes. The production quality is generally good in storage.
