Turkey becomes the main citrus supplier for the European Union in the first quarter of 2022

In the first quarter of 2022, Turkey was the main citrus exporter to the European Union, totaling 112,030 tons (+25.9% compared to the same period of 2021), leaving Egypt behind, which led the ranking in these months in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
The EU imported a total of 348,926 tons (-12.1%) of citrus fruits and fell in all categories, except lemon, which grew to 41,653 tons (61.3%), mainly due to the increase in shipments from Turkey (39,971 tons, +70.08%).
According to the latest report on the reinforced monitoring of citrus imports by the EU published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), the volume of citrus shipments until March is 11.83% lower compared to the average for this same period between 2017 and 2021 (395,767 tons).
Of the total volume imported between January and March 2022, the largest part was small citrus (162,549 tons, -6.1% compared to the same term in 2021), followed by oranges (99.708 tons, -28.0%), grapefruit (45.015 tons, -24.2%) and, finally, that of lemons.
Egypt was the second exporter of citrus fruits to the analyzed market (86.070 tons, -36.6%), followed by Morocco (75.482 tons, -1.2%), Israel (47.494 tons, -8.6%) and China (11.065, -54.5%).

South Africa leads the ranking (359.162 tons, +23%), followed by Turkey (215.764 tons, +1.4%), Morocco (128.478 tons, +14%), Egypt (90.060 tons, -37.1%), Argentina (61.089 tons, +1,078%), Israel (57.082 tons, -10.4%) and China (51.465 tons, -54.4%) and Zimbabwe (26.380 tons, +30%).
