Thailand looks to Shanxi for wider fruit sales

Thailand is working to expand sales of fresh and processed fruit in China’s Shanxi Province, with a focus on supermarket distribution in Yuncheng.

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) met local authorities and visited retail outlets in the city to assess opportunities for a broader range of Thai agricultural products.

On local shelves

During a visit to DX Supermarket, DITP found Thai mangosteen, coconut, longan, pomelo, pineapple and sweet tamarind already on sale.

The department wants to increase the presence of Thai fruit in the chain and explore additional opportunities for other agricultural products and rice.

Priority fruit

Durian, mangosteen, coconut and longan are among the products identified for further promotion, particularly in the premium segment.

Room to grow

Yuncheng has more than 4.6 million residents and is a major producer of temperate fruit, including apples and jujubes. DITP believes China’s secondary cities could offer Thai suppliers more room to expand, with retail competition generally less intense than in the country’s largest metropolitan markets.
