According to the latest report published by WMO (World Meteorological Organization) global temperatures are expected to reach record highs in the next 5 years.
Released just ahead of the World Meteorological Congress (22 May to 2 June), the report forecasts that
.The global mean annual temperature near the surface for each year between 2023 and 2027 is projected to be 1.1°C to 1.8°C higher than the 1850-1900 average.
.There is a 98% chance that at least 1 in the next 5 years will break the temperature record set in 2016, when there was an exceptionally strong El Niño.
.There is a 98% chance that the entire 5-year period will be the warmest on record.
“Global average temperatures are set to continue to rise, taking us further and further away from the climate we are used to,” said Dr Leon Hermanson, an expert Met Office scientist who led the report.
"This will have far-reaching implications for health, food security, water management and the environment. We need to be prepared," said Professor Petteri Taalas, WMO General Secretary.
