Wal-Mart, Tesco, Metro and Carrefour are preparing to further their expansion in India by opening centres to train and educate crucial clients such as hotels, restaurants and kiranas. The chains want to maximise their potential in the country where they are already developing sources for local natural produce.
A programme for sharing expertise in areas like thematic cuisine, food festivals and menu merchandising has been planned by Metro Cash & Carry, which operates five wholesale centres in India. The programme will create awareness about the core products and value offerings at the wholesale centres. Similar training has been conducted in Vietnam, China, Turkey and the Czech Republic.
Carrefour's first store is scheduled to be launched shortly in the National Capital Region (NCR). It plans to roll out its full-fledged training programmes. Already 600 suppliers have been briefed and training sessions have been conducted with 100 farmers. Farmers in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and NCR will be trained for ensuring quality production and effective supply chain management.
Tesco is assessing its opportunities and is currently opening Cash & Carry outlets in the country.
