Despite the uncertainty in the international markets due to the war in Ukraine and the rise in production costs, the next cherry season would be good, according to the technical director of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Cereza del Jerte in Spain, Pilar Diaz Flores.
The PDO Cereza del Jerte has some 2,800 farmers who belong to 7 affiliated companies that constitute 70% of the cherry production in the north of Cáceres, the province of the autonomous community of Extremadura. It has about 225,000 cherry trees of protected varieties and about one and a half million trees of non-protected varieties.
From the DOP they project that the international situation will not affect exports much because the cherry from Cáceres is exported mainly to the United Kingdom, the main consumer in Europe. However, it is not yet known how the war will affect Europe and the UK in terms of production, energy and transport costs. In addition, according to Díaz, the national economies are very affected and it is not known how the market will fare with the issue of inflation.
