First apricots of the season harvested in Southern Turkey
FJ
The early variety of apricots "Nymph", produced in greenhouses in Erdemli, in the South-East of Turkey, gave the first fruits, sold for their weight in gold in Istanbul (about 25 € / kg).
According to the president of the Chamber of Agriculture of Erdemli, this variety has been planted for three years - in a small area in the greenhouse - as an alternative to growing tomatoes. Growers are extremely pleased with the results obtained with a good domestic market.
Even the mild weather in this area have accelerated the ripening process. The president of the Chamber of Agriculture recommends that other producers plant apricot trees under greenhouse in place of tomatoes.
