Decline of the Spanish exports in January, in particular for citrus fruits which fell of more than 15 %.
Fepex, the Spanish federation of the exporting producers of fruits and vegetables has just made the evaluation of the exports of fruits and vegetables.
The export of fruits and vegetables in January, 2010 decreased in 8,5 % in volume with regard to the same month of 2009. Main exported fruits: mandarin, orange and lemon registered declines with regard to January, 2009, of 15,7 %, 17 % and 40 % respectively.
The export of vegetables during January 2010 amounted to 457.367 tons, 4,2 % more than in the same month last year. The main exported vegetables: tomato, lettuce, cucumber and the pepper all showed increases in the quantity exported except the tomato.
The volume of the exports of tomatoes fell with 8 %, adding up 114.619 tons, but keep its value (0,4 %), that is 112.8 million euro.
In valuable terms, the total exports of fruits and vegetables decreased in 5,4 %, adding up 838 million euro. The value is reduced at once for vegetables (8 %), adding up 426 million euro and for fruits (3 %), adding up 412 million euro.
For FEPEX, the evaluation of the export in January, with considerable declines in volume and in value, strengthens the necessity of adopting measures to improve the competitiveness of the producer and the exporter of fruits and vegetables.
