Spain bets on exporting fruit to new international markets

In Asia, efforts are focused on enabling the export of cherries to China, a market already open for peaches, plums, nectarines, grapes, citrus, persimmons and almonds.
In Spain, the Fruit and Vegetable Group, formed by representatives of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, will continue its work in 2025 to open new markets for Spanish exports. Among the objectives are countries such as Argentina, with whom it is negotiating the export of cherries and apples, and China, where it seeks to expand access for cherries.
In 2024, the group worked with more than 16 countries and 26 priority products. In the Americas, for example, agreements are being negotiated with Canada to export cherries, with Argentina for apples and cherries, with Colombia for persimmons and with Chile for citrus and apples. With the United States, negotiations are under way for the export of nectarines, peaches, plums, pears and apples.

The Group, established in 2012 within the framework of the Working Group for the Internationalization of the Agri-Food Sector (GTISA), has held 25 meetings to date, with the next one scheduled for December. Its main objective is to facilitate the access of Spanish products to international markets, thus improving the competitiveness of the fruit and vegetable sector.
