In Piura, Peru, the GAL banana variety, developed by an Israeli company, has been introduced. This variety is resistant to Fusarium Race 4, a fungus that has severely impacted plantations in northern Peru and other countries, according to a local media outlet.
After several years of research, the first seeds arrived in Piura on August 20 and were planted in the greenhouses of Agronegocios Los Ángeles.
The most suitable clone is expected to be ready for cultivation by 2025 or 2026.
With more than 500 hectares affected in the Chira Valley, this variety represents a crucial hope for the Peruvian banana industry.
