In Spain, the fruit and vegetable sector is facing a new unfavorable situation, with a hailstorm which damaged more than 4,000 hectares of vegetables, persimmons, citrus fruits and stone fruits.
Last weekend a major hailstorm caused significant damage to crops and agricultural infrastructure. According to a first estimate from AVA-ASAJA (Asociación Valenciana de Agricultores (AVA-ASAJA), hail hit a strip of more than 4,000 hectares in the areas of Picassent, Alcàsser, Llombai and Catadau.
For some vegetables the damage is very important, for persimmons and citrus fruits the destruction could reach 80%. The damage would be somewhat less severe for stone fruits, such as apricots, peaches and nectarines.
AVA-ASAJA clarified that it is still early to accurately assess the true extent of the damage.
