Through the campaign "CuteSolar: cultivating the flavor of Europe in solar greenhouses" the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producer Organizations of Andalusia, together with Hortiespaña, the Spanish Fruit and Vegetable Interprofessional Organization, and Eucofel (FruitVegetables Europe) continues to inform their consumers about the specific characteristics of agricultural production methods in solar greenhouses, highlighting the importance of respect for the environment, sustainability and the quality of the crops.
A large part of fruits and vegetables exported from Spain to Europe is produced in greenhouse crops mainly centered in Almería and Granada.
The sun is among the advantages of greenhouse production of fruit and vegetables. The coast of Almería and Granada has more than 3000 hours of sunshine a year. This, together with the use of plastics that cover the crops, allows this area to obtain a subsistence agriculture to be one of the most productive systems in the world.
Jan van der Blom, the head of Aproa's Agroecology department, comments that 96 percent of the energy used in the solar greenhouses in Almería and Granada comes from the sun, without using other sources of energy. While in other winterized areas, artificial lighting and heating systems are used from fossil fuels that implies up to 30 percent more energy consumption, and the subsequent polluting effect.
This program has a total investment of more than one and a half million euros and is funded by the proposing organizations and the European Union. It will be developed in Spain, Belgium and Germany until 2022.
