Polish production could reach 4.5 million tonnes this year (Photo: poandpo.com).
According to Zbigniew Chołyk, president of the Stryjno-Sad producer group, the Polish production will be much higher than the estimates made by the producers (3 million tonnes), by the statistical office GUS (3.6 million tonnes), by the World Association of Apple and Pear Producers WAPA (4.17 million tonnes)
The Polish portal Sadyogrody.pl. asked Zbigniew Chołyk, president of the Stryjno-Sad producer group, about the situation of the apple sector in Poland. “We may not achieve a record harvest of 5 million tonnes, but it will certainly be 4.5 million tonnes. Unfortunately, disclosure of such data is viewed by most fruit growers as 'unpatriotic'. But I think we are making a big mistake if we hide this data, because we have to finally understand that we have an overproduction of apples in Poland "underlined Zbigniew Chołyk.
According to Zbigniew Chołyk it is time to take measures to limit the production of apples in Poland. One of the quick actions to take would be to stop the subsidies for new plantings and replace them with subsidies to uproot old orchards. This would reduce the volumes produced. It would also be necessary to improve the quality of the fruit and to set up genuine producer organizations.
