A no-deal Brexit on January 1st is one of the main concerns of the Spanish Fruit & Vegetable sector, of which the United Kingdom is the 3rd market with 1.5 million tonnes of products exported.
January 1st, 2021 is approaching and trade negotiations between the EU and the UK are not making any progress. The uncertainty and nervousness of Spanish exporters is growing.
"Major gaps persist" according to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. After the 9th round of negotiations on future relations after Brexit from January 1st, 2021, the two parties agreed on the need to conclude in October. Without an agreement, customs taxes will come into effect, which will hurt the fruit and vegetable trade.
"Going from full market integration to a no-deal scenario would have devastating consequences for companies, which are already battling the impact of COVID-19," said Markus J. Beyrer, CEO of the European employers' association , BusinessEurope.
The consequences for production and export in the event of no agreement will be analyzed in one of the FRUIT ATTRATION LIVEConnect webinars, organized by FEPEX on October 20th.
