The province of Almeria is the 1st Spanish province for the export of watermelon and the 2nd for the melon. Quality controls, concerning the maturity of the fruits, are carried out.
The Territorial Delegation for Agriculture has carried out a total of 107 checks in 32 melon and watermelon marketing companies as part of the "No cortes en verde" / Don't cut green campaign.
The "No cortes en verde" campaign advocates ripe fruit. Initiated by the Junta de Andalucía, it aims to make farmers aware of the need to offer the highest quality of their products to satisfy consumers.
One of the incidents detected was that for this campaign, the watermelon sizes were smaller than usual, which generated less production volume, not affecting the degree of maturity development that was from 10.6 º Brix on average.
The production of watermelons was 606,000 tonnes (+ 3% compared to last year) and for melon more than 122,000 tonnes (+ 1%). Currently, greenhouse productions are already finished, and the watermelon and melon campaign will continue until the end of July.
