California walnut production will increase and professionals expect the second best crop in history.
This year walnut production in California will be high.
The USDA National Agricultural Statistics has completed its harvest estimate and plans to produce 470,000 tons, Slightly more than 2% compared to the previous harvest, which reached 461,000 tons. These predictions, if confirmed in February 2013, will be the second best crop in history.
California's walnut industry is made up of more than 4,000 producers. It provides 99% supply of the U.S. and controls three quarters of world trade. For the 2010 harvest, about 60% of production was for export markets, placing the nuts as the 4th largest export of California.
