Colombia has immense potential for avocado production and could become a major player in this sector.
The culture of avocados in the country covers about 20 to 22 thousand hectares, the majority of these surfaces produce different varieties (Creole, Reed, Colin Red, Santana, Lorena, Choquete) and only 9000 hectares for the Hass variety. Hass with the best prospects in the markets.
A study of CORPOICA (Colombian government agency responsible for agricultural research) allowed the development of a map of all land suitable for crops of the Hass variety. The study found that more than 1.5 million hectares are suitable and available for growing this variety of avocado. Production potential is huge in the country.
Colombia has only recently begun to export its avocados. Before, there was not enough volume to regularly meet international demand and farms do not have the necessary certifications (GlobalGAP, phytosanitary problems ...) to export to foreign markets. Programs are underway to move forward in this area and allow Colombia to reach the most demanding markets.
