The fruit-vegetable-flowers sector is increasing its exports, the value of which already accounts for a large share of the country's total revenue (Tanzania Horticultural Association photos).
The fruit-vegetable-flowers sector, which has recorded a growth rate of 4.8% over the last 5 years, contributing to just over 40% of total export earnings, has good prospects for development.
The fruit-vegetable-flowers sector recorded the highest growth rate in the agricultural sector. Tanzania's horticultural exports generated $ 642 million in revenue in 2016, up by 17.8% from the previous year.
At this rate, the sector's revenues could double to reach 1.3 billion USD in 2020. Especially since the exported products include fruits (pineapple, bananas, avocados, passion fruit) and vegetables (beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions) among the most requested internationally.
Some temper this optimism by detailing development impediments such as various post-harvest losses and the lack of good storage facilities. But active state support, public-private partnerships and new investments could help the sector achieve this ambitious goal.
