Australian growers said that they will resist to Chinese apple imports.
A Biosecurity Australia report released was recommended the importation of fresh apples from China last week, but the imports would be subject to a range of quarantine conditions, including verification of pest status in the areas nominated by China for export to Australia.
The Goulburn Valley, in the region of Victoria, in Australia, produces 30 % of the nation's apples and close to 90 % of the nation's pears, and disease outbreaks could cripple the industry.
Mr Peters, Development officer of Fruit Growers Victoria, said he was not opposed to trading with China, but that Biosecurity concerns were an issue for both nations.
"We have to make sure there is due diligence at both ends to make sure the product is clean."
Darral Ashton, chairman of Apple and Pear Australia, said that the organisation would continue to fight to protect Australia's relatively pest-free status.
