With the electoral victory and according to the British parliamentary calendar, Brexit could intervene on January 31, 2020. A transition period is however planned until the end of 2020.
The electoral victory will allow Prime Minister Boris Johnson to present again to Parliament the terms of the Brexit negotiated with Brussels. The vote will take place in the coming weeks and Brexit could be formalized as of January 31, 2020.
Until the end of 2020 a transition period is planned too avoid sudden breakdowns in trade and to facilitate negotiations on relations with the EU, the United Kingdom's main trading partner.
As far as agricultural products are concerned, the United Kingdom is far from being self-sufficient. Its agricultural production covers only 49% of consumption and EU countries supply 30% of the agricultural products consumed, the balance coming from the rest of the world.
In terms of fruit and vegetables, the UK imports 2.3 times more from the EU than it exports to the EU.
