The arrival of summer heat in Europe will boost demand for melons and watermelons.
After the poor performance recorded in June, professionals in the melon and watermelon sectors of the Murcia region (Spain) are regaining confidence: the arrival of heat in Europe will reactivate demand.
In the region of Murcia, the campaign begins at the end of March with melons. While prices were acceptable for early varieties, they fell in June and at times fell below the cost of production. For watermelons, a strong demand was noted in May and in the first days of June but the supply failed. At the end of last month, the products were numerous whereas the demand slowed down in the countries of consumption. The arrival of summer heat in Europe will boost demand.
According to MAPA 2018 data, the Ministry of Agriculture, watermelon surfaces total 19,867 hectares, more than half of which in Andalusia (11,134 ha). Melon surfaces amounted to 20,116 hectares with the Castilla-La Mancha region in the lead (7,238 ha) followed by Murcia (5,566 ha).
