In 2021, Colombian avocado exports to the US totaled 2,376 tons and in 2022 the country plans to achieve a 30% increase, says Jorge Enrique Restrepo, executive director of the Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters Corporation of Colombia (Corpohass).
To achieve the objective, they will focus on quality of the fruit and its adaptation to increasingly strict requirements. Restrepo stressed that with this plan they project to strengthen supplies to the US compared to the previous year, with increases of 40% by 2023 and 50% by 2024. In addition, they will seek to promote the fruit in the domestic market, a sector in which they also have growth opportunities.
According to the director, currently, they have 262 farms authorized to export avocado that accumulate 7,918 hectares, in addition to 313 farms under surveillance that total 9,236 hectares. The challenge for the next few years lies in a greater qualification of properties to export to the United States and a generation of trust of exporters to ensure long-term commercial relations.
