New difficulty for the citrus sector in Florida, the last cold snap had negative impacts. The Ministry of Agriculture has revised its harvest forecasts downwards.
According to media from the state of Florida, USDA the United States Department of Agriculture has just revised its forecast for oranges, by -7% compared to the figures for March, which brings the variation to -19% compared to compared to the initial forecast made in October. For grapefruit, the forecast is -8% compared to the previous forecast.
The overall citrus harvest for the current year is expected to reach 42.6 million 90 lb (=40.8 kg) cases, including 38.2 million cases of oranges and 3.6 million cases of grapefruits as well than 800,000 cases of other types, mainly mandarins and tangelos.
This harvest volume will be the lowest yield since the 40.87 million cases produced in the 1937-38 season.
The 2020-21 season had reached 52.8 million cases of oranges and 4.1 million cases of grapefruits as well as 890,000 cases of tangerines and tangelos. Two decades ago, Florida reached an overall citrus production of 287.2 million cases, including 230 million cases of oranges.
