Almería low prices at campaign's winding up
Spain
Wednesday 09 July 2008
The areas of Malaga, Murcia and Granada are currently in full production of products such as melons and cucumbers, therefore the demand of fruit and vegetables from Almeria is increasingly reduced.
Yellow melon got during the last week of June very low quotations around 6 cents per kilo. Furthermore, as a consequence to the transport strike, countries like France or Belgium stopped to purchase Almeria’s fruit and vegetables in the last two weeks of June.
For the above reasons many experts of the sector forecast that a major part of fruit vegetable traders will close their season in these days.
Green beans have been the best performing vegetables for campaign 2007/2008 in Spain, not only for their prices and volumes but because it is the most stable product throughout the campaign. For the current one for instance, varieties such as “Perona Larga” and “Helda” have registered price rises for this year too, even surpassing 3 euros per kilo in some cases. Better prices for Emerite or Strike, despite these are characterized by fewer volumes produced.
