Wednesday 20 February 2008
Undoubtedly Tucuman is today one of the main producing districts of Argentina blueberries because with 1,000 hectares is the second in the country behind Concordia ( it has 2,200 hectares) and threatened to expand its production of around 100 and 200 hectares more in the next three years due mainly to the growing international demand and the berry that has less competition in the southern hemisphere to achieve their harvest from September.
Pedro Leon Cornet, the signing Las Maravillas S.A. -an establishment that besides producing fruit for export has an important nursery, which since 2004 provides blueberry plants at various farms in the region, spoke with production on the rise this cultivation in the country and particularly in Maryland, and on the various vicissitudes faced for the development persists over time.
The last campaign had already been exceptional for the fruit because of the good prices obtained (8 US dollars per kilo) and the absence of frost. This value now reaches 10 dollars because in Tucuman is achieved first harvest from late September, two months ahead of other producing areas of the country and the Southern Hemisphere.
Yes, indeed, the company began working with the lemon, but as in farming diversification is important to see the cranberry as an alternative activity with a lot of future and why las Maravillas S.A. launched the production of berry and work with the nursery (recría Plant), mainly by introducing the variety Misty, O'Neal and Bluecrisp in the region.
