Global Pulse Confederation elects a new President
MLK
Global Pulse Confederation represents all sectors of the global pulse (grain legume) industry value chain - with membership from 21 National Associations and over 600 corporate members from 55 countries.
Ratification of the appointment was a highlight of the GPC General Assembly held on the last day of the annual industry convention which took place 12 to 16 April in Las Vegas. Next convention in 2016 will be held in Turkey.
Retiring President Hakan Bahceci congratulated his successor and noted Mr Arslan’s long and active involvement in the development of the Pulse Industry. “Mr Arslan has been personally active in the development and expansion of the global pulse sector for over three decades “ he said, “he and his family have been active in the sector for over 60 years, leading one of the sector’s largest pulse processing and exporting companies with a global presence”.
“The world pulses sector has never before been in the exceedingly positive position it currently enjoys” said Mr Arslan. “Global production and trade volumes have never been higher. The profile of pulses, both in their traditional form and in new ingredient formats is growing seemingly by the day. This momentum we currently enjoy will certainly be dramatically expanded following the United Nations declaration of an International Year of Pulses (IYOP) for 2016”.
“Having a UN dedicated year is the greatest opportunity in a generation to give pulses the attention they deserve” said Mr Arslan. “Beans, lentils, peas and chickpeas have been the cornerstone of global nutrition for centuries. IYOP will drive our goal for Pulses to increase food security for those with shortages and to tackle the increase in lifestyle diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Plus they improve cropping systems and are good for farmers”.
“Apart from seed funding of $1.1 million already committed by GPC, very considerable external funding for specific projects in support of IYOP has been committed by both industry and governments in participating countries”. “Building on the strength and collaborative approach of GPC it is my intention this year to launch the pulses 20-20 initiative clearly outlining a strategy to exceed 20% growth of the global sector within 20 years starting at IYOP 2016”
