Italy, good first potato quotations
Italy
Sunday 02 September 2007
For the next common potato campaign, the Institute for Food Agriculture Market Services ISMEA has forecast a slight surface growth, mainly due to the positive results of the previous campaign which have pushed farmers to increase investments.
Furthermore, the good performance of early potatoes during last spring 2007 has brought operators to very good judgements also for the common potatoes’ quotations. Actually the first price negotiations have started at higher levels compared to the past campaign.
In Piemonte and Veneto, increased surfaces will mean larger volumes than the average. The harvesting operations are taking place regularly and the first products appear to be of excellent quality.
In Emilia-Romagna and Lazio regions, despite to augmented surfaces and due to the atypical climate last winter and spring, minor volumes are expected.
In Abruzzi, invested surfaces are stable compared to the last season. Due to the water deficiency, products of medium size are expected; therefore, volumes should register a slight decrease.
In Campania, the satisfactory results of last campaign has favoured increased invested surfaces, but this won’t mean larger volumes due to a scarce quality of seeds during planting and to the weather conditions. However, farmers’ income should be compensated by the increased average price of the product.
