Among British large-scale retailers, Sainsbury’s is the one growing the most in sales in the last three months (July-September). In the mentioned period, the group’s turnover has improved by 4.3% compared to the same period 2007.
“Sainsbury’s is successfully stealing from its competitors”, declared Chief Executive Justin King. Both traditional customers of high level supermarkets such as Waitrose and Marks & Spencer, that have recently registered a reduction, and consumers of discounts like Aldi e Lidl seem to have turned to Sainsbury’s.
The explanation could be the widened range of “Basic” products (Sainsbury’s brand for lower priced products), whose sales have improved by 30% compared to last year.
Also No. 1 retailer Tesco - similarly to Sainsbury’s - has improved by 4% compared to 2007 (though in a slightly different period than that of Sainsbury’s).
On the contrary, the “big” most affected by the economic crisis is Marks & Spencer (-5.9% in the food segment, the worst result in the last 9 years).
