Stable areas for strawberry crops in 2020

Composed of representatives of producer and exporter associations, the 'Strawberry' contact group brought together professionals from France, Italy and Spain to analyze the forecasts for the 2020 season.
The group estimated that the area of cultivation will remain stable, with very slight fluctuations. 2% increase for Spain, but 4% decrease in Italy and crop area in France identical to 2019.
For Spain, the officials of FRESHUELVA and FEPEX indicated that the area of strawberries in Huelva will decrease from 6,095 hectares last season to 6,217 hectares this year, an increase of 2%.
Italian representatives explained that the area of the crop in 2020 will be 3,646 hectares, 4% less than last season, while in France it will remain the same as in 2019, with 3,300 hectares.
However, it has been clarified that yields can vary considerably between the 3 large EU countries, depending on the operating model. For example, in France, of the 3,300 hectares of strawberries, 1,900 hectares in total correspond to greenhouse operations, 60% of which are heated, which makes it possible to develop the production of strawberries and ensure market supply. French practically all year round.
