Spain
Sunday 07 October 2007
Up to July 2007, Spanish fruit and vegetable exports have dropped by 1.27% compared with the same period last year, totalling 5.6 million tons. The reason for that is mainly the decrease of stonefruits’ foreign sales, which recorded a very negative beginning of campaign.
From January to July fruit exports amounted 3.5 million tons (+1.8%) for a value of 2,619 million euro, decreasing by 1%. Besides stonefruit, apricots exports diminished by some 50% compared to last year (with 23,689 tons); cherries too registered a relevant drop by 57%, totalling 10,517 tons. Decreasing as well peaches (-23%, 114,164 tons) and nectarines (-23%, 162,947 tons), melons and watermelons (-8 and 22% respectively).
On the contrary, citrus fruit experienced in the same period a significant increase by 19.49%.
For vegetables, the reduction in the first seven months of 2007 was by 5%, amounting 2.4 million tons; in terms of value, there has been an increase by 2%, for 2,172 million euro total.
The most important vegetables as far as exports are concerned recorded a slight decrease, like tomato (-3%, 634,938 tons), and pepper, with a significant drop of exports by 22% (with 230,974 tons) mainly due to the phytosanitary problems suffered on some specific markets.
A ranking of the best performing Communities for exports show Valencia at first place (2.2 million tons, +8%), followed by Andalucía (1.7 million tons, -6%) and Murcia (1.2 million tons, -8%).
Main destination countries for Spanish fruit and vegetable exports keep on being Germany, France, UK and low countries. The EU accounts for 94% of total Spanish exports, however, outside EU exports have increased in the mentioned period by 10%.
On the other side, imports from January to July 2007 recorded a relevant growth in volumes (by 14%, 1.3 million tons), as well as in value (+28%, 877 million euro). Potatoes is the most imported product in Spain, with 464,225 (-5%), followed by far by apples with 154,120 (+22%).
