Fruit and vegetable Production soars

The Indian government has unveiled the production figures of the country for fruits and vegetables.
Crop production has increased in all sectors: in 2010-2011 the country produced 137.7 million tons of vegetables (133.7 million in 2009-2010, 129.1 million in 2008-2009) and 75.8 million tons of fruits (71.5 million in 2009-2010, 68.5 milion in 2008-2009).
Crops occupy an area of 17.7 million ha producing 218.7 million tons of fruits, vegetables and spices.
India is the second
largest producer of fruits in the world: it is the largest producer of mango, banana, papaya, pomegranate and grapes. About 40% of the world's mangoes and 30% of bananas in the world are produced in India.
India is the second largest producer of vegetables after China. Leader in the production of peas, India occupies the second position in the production of onion, eggplant, cabbage, and third position for potato and tomato in the world.
