Spices exports from India up 5 % by volume in first half of 2016-2017
Boosted by large shipment of nutmeg, mace, cumin and garlic, spices exports from India grew five percent in volume in first half of 2016-2017 and rose to Rs 8415.97 crore ( approx.: € 1,173 billions– US $ 1,236 billions ) during the period, registering a 7% increase in value.
Today, Indian spices are the most sought-after globally, given their excellent aroma, texture, taste and medicinal value. India has the largest domestic market for spices in the world. Traditionally, spices in India have been grown in small land holdings, with organic farming gaining prominence in recent times.
Major importers of Indian spices in 2015-16 were US, China, Vietnam, UAE, Indonesia, Malaysia, UK, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, and Germany.
Export of spices rose to 437,360 tons during April-September 2016, compared to 414,780 tons in the first half of 2015-2016.
Top spices produced in the country include pepper, cardamom, chili, ginger, turmeric, coriander, cumin, celery, fennel, fenugreek, ajwain, dill seed, garlic, tamarind, clove, and nutmeg among others.

Chili become the most exported spice from for the April –September 2016 period with the shipment of 165,000 tons. Garlic exports contributed substantially to the overall growth during the period, after rising 132 % in value terms and 55 % in quantity.
