Sales of organic products rose by 28% year-on-year to NOK896m (E100m) in 2008, but this was sharply down from the 46% growth the sector saw in 2007, according to new figures from market researchers Nielsen.
Sales of organic cheese surged in 2008, while sales of organic bread, egg, coffee, juice and baby foods also grew. However, organic milk, cream, fruit and berries saw their sales dip during the year.
The decline is likely due to a variety of factors, including a rise in prices, the trading-down of consumers in the financial crisis, and lower visibility following abolishment of organic brand Debio.
