The effect of China's bumper apple crop last year is apparent in 2007. In fact, there were suggestions the apple juice concentrate (AJC) industry was finally slowing down.
But this has proved premature. In the end, China sold 295. 600 tons of AJC in the first three months this year, over 100.000 tonnes more than this time last year. This is the fifth consecutive year of increase since records began.
After a dip last year, the US came back to buy 100.780 tons of Chinese AJC in January-March 2007, its highest ever.
No one else compared with this kind of volume, but the top 15 importers have all increased their uptake. The Netherlands boosted its Chinese purchases considerably to 38.970 tons compared with 26.590 tons the same period last year, while Germany, a big AJC consuming country, bought 38.350 tons, up 76% than last year.
