Brazil urges to exclude fertilizers from international sanctions against Russia
VU
Brazil is one of the main world importers of fertilizers and seeks that these products are not subject to sanctions.
Brazil obtained the support of Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay and Paraguay in the initiative that excludes fertilizer products from international sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, reported Tereza Cristina Dias, Minister of Agriculture of Brazil.
This proposal will be reviewed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
85% of fertilizers for grain crops used by Brazilian producers come from imports, more than a fifth of which (9 million tons in 2021) come from Russia.
Dias noted that fertilizer shortages will undermine food security and lead to food inflation, something that should concern all countries.
The minister hopes to get support from the FAO to persuade other members of the Organization of the United Nations.
It is worth remembering that before the war between Russia and Ukraine, the global supply of fertilizers was already shrinking after the United States sanctioned Belarus, another major producer.
