Resistant strawberry varieties for challenging growing conditions
VU | Vivero El Pinar
The hot weather in the Mediterranean Arc during late September and early October has affected the strawberry planting. Such events highlight the importance of having strong strawberry varieties that can handle less cold in the nursery and high planting temperatures while still rooting well.
EL PINAR, a company managing the varietal program for Plant Sciences & Berry Genetics in southern Europe and North Africa, makes rigid varieties that help plants cope with stress without losing quality or productivity.
The company's success comes not just from the rigidness of its varieties but also from smart nursery practices and a campaign strategy that fits each production area. They manage the nursery carefully to ensure good maturation despite high temperatures. Plant start-up and delivery match the climate in each area, making sure it's right for rooting.
EL PINAR has expanded and diversified its nursery areas across Segovia, Ávila, and Romania, along with nine plant production centers. This has allowed them to increase plant sales by 10%, supplying about 9 million plants every day to clients in Spain, Morocco, Greece, and Italy.
To meet the growing demand and help customers better, EL PINAR has added more people to its technical-commercial department. They want to assist farmers in adapting to changes in climate, planting times, and types of plants.
EL PINAR's top varieties like Victory and Inspire are doing well in the Mediterranean Arc due to their toughness and fruit quality. Victory is a popular choice for farmers in Huelva and Morocco, showing success in Italy and Greece as well. Inspire is also in demand, leading the premium market in Italy, Spain, and Morocco.
Even though planting was delayed, the first EL PINAR strawberry varieties are expected to be in markets by late November or early December, just like in previous years. The combination of toughness and quick rooting makes this possible.
