Russia
Tuesday 16 September 2008
The Spanish secretary of State for Rural affairs and Water Josep Puxeu, with a delegation of high officials from the communities of Valencia and Murcia as well as a number of entrepreneurs, met the Russian secretary of State for Agriculture Alexander Petrikov and the head of the Federal Service of Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision, Serguei Dankvert. The goal was giving a boost to the cooperation and trade relations in the agrofood field between the two Countries.
The Russian Federation proved to be much interested in Spain’s Mediterranean production of fruit and vegetables, citrus fruits and wines and highlighted their openness to increase wheat exports, following to the tensions occurred on various markets in recent months.
Further to aspects related to trade, the meeting also served to discuss about the problems created by the strict phytosanitary maximum levels applied by Russia to fruit and vegetables exports from the European Union. Such measures have created much difficulty to Spanish exports to Russia, especially of citrus fruits.
With regard to this problem, the Russian government promised that they will keep on working side by side with Spain so that the measures requested by Russia would not halt Spanish exports of citrus fruits.
