The total of the retail points of sales increased in 2007 by 16% compared to 2006 while the number of hypermarkets rose by 19%.
Currently leading the sector is the Croatian company Konzum, operating in the large-scale distribution sector and belonging to the key local agro-food factory Agrokor. Konzum has a market share of 30% and over 300 points of sales throughout Croatia.
Konzum is followed by the Slovenian Mercator, the German Kaufland, the Austrian-German Billa (Rewe Group), by the national Plodine, Getro, K.T.C., Kerum and Tommy and by the German Lidl. All have a share of the Croatian market lower than 10%.
Mercator registered the highest development in 2007, rising from the fifth to the second place in ranking after the acquisition last year of the national chain Presoflex. Billa and Getro on the contrary suffered from some losses.
In the wholesale sector, the leader is again the national chain Konzum with a market share between 30 and 40%, followed by the German Metro Cash&Carry (15-25%) and by the Croatian Getro).
